Pimax 8KX and Automobilista 2

My settings…for now

I am a very new user of Pimax, and thus I am trying to find what are the perfect settings to get enough FPS in the simulation, while not losing too much quality. I’ve created this write-up to document my current settings and request feedback and improvements. Also as a repository for when I have to reinstall the game or revert to triples/VR.

My system specs

It is important to keep in mind that all these settings are relative to the specific specs of my system. Thus, here they are:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5950x, no overclocking
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX-3090
  • Pimax 8KX
  • Motion rig, and a bunch of simracing devices

Pimax Settings

The screenshots below are all using Pimax Experience, but the same settings can be used via PiTools.

I am using Normal FOV (150deg) as that is enough for me (e.g., I can see the left side rearview mirror). I *could* go to Large (170deg) but in my opinion, the view is not worth the climb in that case.

Notice how Parallel Projection is Enabled, as that is needed for AMS2 unfortunately. Were this not needed, we would gain much speed.

Most importantly, I am running the headset at 75Hz, Native, with 91 in Backlight. Yes, I would like to run it at 90Hz, but I get horrible flickering (in all games/environments) when doing so. Until I can get that fixed, 75Hz works for me just fine.

SteamVR Settings

Nothing too custom here. Pretty much as it comes. 100% Render resolution, 100% supersampling.

Automobilista 2 settings

The most important thing is that I installed the FSR mod, as per this thread, and downloaded the AMS2-friendly DLLs from this link. I left the configuration (openvr_mod.cfg) untouched, which means: renderScale=0.59, sharpness=0.9, radius=0.5, applyMPIBias=true, and debugMode=false (just in case the config file gets changed)

In the game itself, I have the following:

The Results

In a nutshell, I can stay at 75FPS without major trouble, even with a full grid. I suspect that rain and night will bring this down a bit, but there seems to be headroom.

The performance graph of SteamVR shows mostly green.

The resolution in the game is very good, in my tired-eyes opinion. The screenshot below is of course not representative but shows the instant FPS and the average FPS (after a race)
